If you’re planning a trip to Paris, you’ll probably go to all of the hot spots first. No doubt, you’ll want to see the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triumphe, Notre Dame Cathedral and the Louvre. And every tourist spends some time shopping on the Champs Elysees. Wherever you decide to go, make sure that you have adequate travel insurance, and have a great time. Here are a few destinations worth seeing in Paris that you may not have heard of:
- The Bateaux Mouches. See Paris by boat on the Seine River. The excursions last a little more than an hour, and only cost around $12, making it by far one of the best experiences in Paris for the money. While on the trip, you will see most of the famous landmarks in Paris as well as the beautiful bridges that span the Seine.
- The Jules Verne. OK, this one is in the Eiffel Tower, but you can’t just walk in. One of the nicer restaurants in Paris, it’s well worth the reservations. Pricey, but who can resist dining with such a superb view of the city?
- Montmatre and Sacre Coeur. This little village is actually on a hill just north of Paris, but it’s well worth going to see. The basilica is amongst the finest in Europe, and the village has a number of shops and cafes. Most importantly, however, is the art community here. Art lovers really should take advantage of their first chance to visit Montmatre et Sacre Coeur.
- Quais de la Seine. Located right across the street from the Notre Dame Cathedral, used booksellers called bouquinistes offer not only books but old postcards, paintings, art prints, and more. If you’re going to Notre Dame anyway, it’s well worth checking out. Some of the best souvenirs are available here, cheap.
- Visit the local jazz clubs. Whether you want to hear actual jazz, world music, or the uniquely French chanson, check out clubs like Caveau de la Huchette, New Morning, and Au Duc des Lombards. Paris has one of the most diverse music scenes around, and the jazz in particular is legendary.
When you arrive in Paris, ask the locals where they like to go. You’re likely to uncover some treasures that aren’t on any travel brochures. Make sure that you try to at least exchange pleasantries in French. Most Parisians speak English, but will appreciate the courtesy. Have a great time, but make sure that you have travel insurance. It’s never fun being sick, but it can really ruin a vacation (and your pocketbook) if you get sick overseas without it.
